Who we are

Our Church

Shekinah Assembly of God is called by God to make disciples through the process of loving the lost and developing them to full maturity in Christ; set in a dynamic fellowship around prayer, worship and ministry of the Word; thus making members into ministers of the gospel.

A strong disciplemaking church impacting people and nations for Christ.
At Shekinah, we are committed to love God passionately and love people purposefully. Our dream is to bring maximum glory to God by becoming a Spirit-filled community where people can find love, forgiveness, hope and encouragement.

There are 5 aspects to this dream:

1. Fruitful Outreach
We dream of sharing God’s love practically through lifestyle evangelism, local community work and sending out mission teams. Obeying the call to communicate God’s Word with those who don’t yet have a personal relationship with Jesus. To be a messenger of His love through Evangelism.

2. Loving Relationships
We dream of welcoming people into the fellowship of our church family – loving, learning, laughing and living together in covenantal relationships. Obeying the call to incorporate God’s people into the fellowship of believers. To be a member of His family through Fellowship.

3. Intentional Disciplemaking
We dream of developing people to spiritual maturity through life-transforming Connect Groups, discipleship, and mentoring. Obeying the call to educate God’s family to become more like Christ. To be a model of His character through Discipleship.

4. Empowering Ministries
We dream of releasing every believer for a significant ministry by helping them to discover and develop their spiritual gifts and passion. Obeying the call to demonstrate God’s love by meeting the needs of others. To be a minister of His grace through Ministry.

5. Vibrant Worship
We dream of a vibrant atmosphere of worship, prayer and discipleship where people are hungry to encounter the presence of God and the manifestation of signs, wonders and miracles. Obeying the call to celebrate God’s presence and honor him with our lifestyle. To be a magnifier of His name through Worship.

1. Empowerment In The Spirit
We seek to be filled with the Holy Spirit; to be conscious, connected and empowered by the Spirit in life and ministry (Isa 40:31; 2 Cor 12:9a; Ps 27:1).

2. Enthusiasm In Life
We seek to live each day as a God-given gift; to truly live and not only to exist; to live a purpose-driven life with enthusiasm in fulfilling God’s call for our lives. Seize the day! (Rom 12:11; Phil 3:14; Jn 10:10).

3. Excellence In Service
We seek to embrace excellence in our life and ministry as we are called to be servants of the King. We will learn to grow deeper and give to Him and His people the best we can be and offer (Mt 20:28; Col 3:23; Phil 2:14).

4. Example In Leadership
We seek to embrace excellence in our life and ministry as we are called to be servants of the King. We will learn to grow deeper and give to Him and His people the best we can be and offer (Mt 20:28; Col 3:23; Phil 2:14).

5. Everyone Is Important
We seek to see and treat others as people for whom Christ has died; we want to be an instrument of God’s love to an indifferent uncaring world and to develop the potential and possibilities of every member in Shekinah (Jer 29:11; 1 John 4:7; 1 John 3:16).

At Shekinah, we focus on small groups to make disciples:

1. Connect Groups (CG) – where disciples are built and established.

2. Discipleship Groups (DG) – where workers are trained and equipped.

3. Mentoring Groups (MG) – where leaders are developed and sent to multiply.

The story of Shekinah began in 1980 when God led a young man named Frankie Lee to repeat his G.C.E. ‘O’ Level examinations at Tiong Bahru Secondary School. Filled with a strong evangelistic fervor, Frankie soon found and trained five schoolmates, two of whom would later become our founding pastors, Andrew Tan and Apelles Poh. Together, they began a Bible study group and named it “Calvary Group of Christ”.

Growth & Movements
With the school’s permission, this group of young pioneers met regularly on Saturday mornings in a classroom for worship, prayer, Bible study and fellowship. They actively witnessed to their classmates and the group soon grew to 50 by 1981. From 1981-1986, the Lord led them to various locations – Tiong Bahru Park and Bo Bo Tan Gardens at Tiong Bahru, the Young Women Christian Association (YWCA) at Outram Park, Bible House at Armenian Street, Apollo Hotel, Furama Hotel and the Boys Brigade Centre.

Turning Points
1987 was a turning point when the group changed its name to Shekinah Assembly of God after her affiliation with the Assemblies of God of Singapore. Pastor Andrew Tan was officially installed as the Senior Pastor and Pastor Apelles Poh as the Lay Pastor. It was in the same year that the Lord provided them a more permanent worship venue at the Singapore Construction House. In 1990, Shekinah was registered with the Registry of Societies. Then in 1997, the Lord led the church through an incredible faith journey where members gave sacrificially to purchase a $1.2 million freehold property at Queensway Shopping Centre.

Leadership Transitions
In 2001, Pastor Andrew Tan moved on to serve in another church, after pastoring Shekinah for 15 years. He was succeeded by his counterpart Pastor Apelles Poh who then led the church as a bi-vocational pastor for 4 years before handing over to Pastor Hock Cheng, a “home-grown” youth, in 2005. Since taking over, Pastor Hock Cheng has led the church to serve collectively as a team through cells; disciple the believers through an “Equipping track”; and develop the leadership base through mentoring.

Our Future
Today, Shekinah Assembly of God continues to grow and see new people saved and added to the Kingdom of God. We enjoy what we are called to do as a disciplemaking church – loving God passionately, loving people purposefully.
